Chapter Eight

I’ll Call You

After leaving Amy with Reggie, and making him swear that he sees her home- whether that be his or hers- I walk home with Ryan. I think the shock and the cold is sobering me up a little, and now I’m nervous in his company. We nearly kissed. I didn’t imagine it. It did almost happen if not for Amy.

“I’m definitely sobering up because I feel like a total idiot,” I say. “My foot is aching too. I think I may have twisted it a little playing catch up with the door.”

Ryan stops walking, “Take those things off your feet and hop on.” He doesn’t need to ask me twice, I take off my heels and jump on his back, piggy back style. “So, you didn’t answer my question,” he says, as we approach my block of flats. “Do you think a girl like you would be interested in a guy like me?”

I lean down so my mouth is by his ear. “Since day one.”

He stops and does a little jig on the spot, letting go of my legs to do some kind of old man dancing with his arms. “She likes me!” he shouts at no one.

I laugh. “You’re insane.” He jumps me up his back a little higher and sets off once again.

“Would you like to come up?” I ask, as I type in the door code.

He meets my eye. “I really would.” He follows me up the dark staircase with the one working light, and helps me find the right key in the dark. I don’t bother turning on the lounge light. I just kiss him and drag him toward the sofa. His mouth against mine is sweet and tastes of beer. I grapple with his shirt, sliding it over his head, and his hands run the length of my body.

Cat meows from the sofa. “Move it, Cat,” I say, swatting him away. “Cat meows again. “At least budge up.”

This halts our stride a bit, and I have to physically lift Cat and shut him in the kitchen. I light my scented candle to give us a little light, and then resume where we left off.

“What’s his name?” Ryan asks.

“Cat.”

“You called your cat, Cat?”

I press my lips to his neck. “He was a stray and I didn’t want to name him in case he had owners, so I just called him Cat. I think it suits him.” His jeans drop away from him, and I can feel the heat from his body.

“Makes sense,” he replies, kissing down the length of my throat.

He manages the clasp of my halter top and I let it fall away. Swiftly, he moves on to the buckle on my trousers. As I kick my jeans off, I lose balance. Ryan makes an attempt to catch me, but my flying elbow meets him in the face, and I fall onto the side table with a crash. The candle goes flying, and in the next instance, Ryan yells out. His boxers are alight.
